Friday Hillary Clinton swears in Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women's Issues Melanne Verveer

On Friday, June 12th, Hillary Clinton met with Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Fander Falconi Benitez at the State Department. They spoke to the press before their meeting.

The press managed to squeeze in a question about the Iranian elections.

"Madame Secretary, what do you think of the Iranian turnout at the Iranian elections today?"

"It’s a very positive sign that the people of Iran want their voices and their votes to be heard and counted. And like many people inside and outside of Iran, we are going to wait and see what the results are."

Read their full remarks here or watch below: The Secretary also swore in Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women's Issues Melanne Verveer. I posted about her arrival to the State Department here. And if you read it you can see that Hillary and Melanne go way back.

Hillary had a lot of great things to say in her remarks, including this:

"Now, you might think that this was a really easy choice for me. Melanne is famous for her rolodex, which at last count had more than 6,000 names. She has traveled to 80-plus countries and has conducted personal conversations with every woman leader, entrepreneur, activist, and advocate in every one of those countries, thereby adding more names to her rolodex.

She speaks several difficult languages. During our White House days together, Melanne single-handedly elevated U.S. foreign policy by delivering a speech in its entirety in Ukraine in Ukrainian.

So why hesitate about this appointment at all? Well, I had to figure out how I was going to keep up with her. Melanne has been, like all the rest of you, telling me what to do for years."
