They arrived shortly after President Obama met with Prime Minister Gordon Brown to have breakfast together before they held talks with state officials.
Afterward, there was a press conference in which all attended. The Prime Minister opened with a message suited for the times:
Ours is not an alliance of convenience; it is a partnership of purpose. It's a partnership that at times of challenge is resilient and at times of change is constant.Prime Minister Brown also gave a shout out to our girl Hil saying, "Can I also say it's an extraordinary privilege to have Secretary of State Clinton here..." Holla!President Obama and I are agreed about the significance of this week's G-20 meeting, that the world is coming together to act in the face of unprecedented global financial times. Our first duty is to those who are suffering most -- the people anxious about their mortgages, their jobs and their family's future. For them, the pain of recession is all too real. But let us not forget that in 1929, when the Wall Street crash happened and led to recession, it was not until 1945 that the world came together to reshape the world economy. Then it took more than 15 years.
Today, within months of this financial crisis, we are coming together to solve the common problems we face, we are cooperating to shorten the recession, and we are working together to protect and save jobs.
You can read the full transcript of the press conference here!
Secretary Clinton and Secretary Milliband leave 10 Downing Street together after the press conference. Again attacked by photographs!
After the meetings at 10 Downing Street , there were also talks with Conservative Party Leader David Cameron at the Winfield House, the U.S. Ambassador's residence in London. As you can see from the photo above it looked like a great time... hah. Also while at the Winfield House, President Obama and Secretary Clinton met with with Chinese President Hu Jintao. It was announced today that Obama will visit China this year after being invited by Chinese President and both leaders agreed to set up a regular talks. Our two countries agreed to establish a “U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue” to discuss financial, trade and other issues between the two countries and vowed to combat protectionism that may be arising amid a global recession.
“The relationship between the U.S. and China has become extremely constructive,” Obama said. “Our economic relationships are very strong. I have said publicly and I continue to believe that the relationship between China and the United States is not only important for the citizens of both our countries but will help to set the stage for how the world deals with a whole host of challenges.”
The White House also issued a statement today saying that the U.S. and China were looking to resume discussions about human rights as soon as possible. Whoo!Stay tuned for the part two of today's meetings!
