Travel: Hillary Clinton in Moscow Day One!

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton attends a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Moscow on October 13, 2009. Clinton began a mission in Russia to advance negotiations for a new US-Russian nuclear arms treaty and seek Moscow's help in curbing Iran's nuclear ambitions. While Hillary was in Moscow she did so much, I could barely keep track of it all! Here is a brief rundown of a few of the many things she had going on.

As we have all known since the announcement of this trip to Russia, Secretary Clinton attended an bilateral meeting with Sergey Lavrov, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, in Moscow. Let's not forget they were also together in Zurich at the peace treaty signing.

Basically Secretary Clinton was trying to gauge Moscow's willingness to back specific measures that could be imposed on Iran if it fails to comply with international demands to come clean on its atomic activities. Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said sanctions now would be counterproductive. Lavrov said every effort should be made to deal with Iran using diplomatic means.

Secretary Clinton said the U.S. agreed it was important to pursue diplomacy with Iran but she kept the way open for sanctions further down the line.

At the same time that we are very vigorously pursuing this track, we are aware that we might not be as successful as we need to be, so we have always looked at the potential of sanctions in the event we are not successful and cannot assure ourselves and others that Iran has decided not to pursue nuclear weapons.

Beyond the big topic of Iran, the two diplomats also discussed a recent Obama administration decision to scale back a Bush-era proposal for an anti-missile shield in Europe.

Also on the agenda were the FP essentials: Afghanistan, nuclear-armed North Korea, NATO expansion, the situation in Georgia after its conflict with Russia last year, human rights and arms control.

Secretary Clinton also hosted a reception for Civil Society Leaders while in Moscow and had a meeting with Dimitriy Medvedev, the President of the Russian Federation.

And it was reported that later in the evening the Secretary attended the Opera! She apparently went and saw a performance of the Love of Three Oranges at the Bolshoi Theatre.

Some people on the right of the political spectrum are trying to paint her Moscow trip as a failure because Russia won't support sanctions against Iran but I think the media and some other people have lost the ability to see the forest for the trees- there is more to our diplomatic relationship with Russia (and other countries) than simply trying to threaten Iran. She managed to ease tensions between the US and Russia which helps us move towards nonproliferation.

Great photos by the way.

How's the puppy? ;)
